Zinc Acetate is used for:
Treating Wilson disease in certain patients. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Zinc Acetate is a mineral. It works by blocking copper from being absorbed into the body.
Do NOT use Zinc Acetate if:
- you are allergic to any ingredient in Zinc Acetate

Before using Zinc Acetate:
Some medical conditions may interact with Zinc Acetate. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have any medical conditions, especially if any of the following apply to you:
- if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breast-feeding
- if you are taking any prescription or nonprescription medicine, herbal preparation, or dietary supplement
- if you have allergies to medicines, foods, or other substances
Some MEDICINES MAY INTERACT with Zinc Acetate.
Ask your health care provider if Zinc Acetate may interact with other medicines that you take. Check with your health care provider before you start, stop, or change the dose of any medicine.
How to use Zinc Acetate:
Use Zinc Acetate as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.
- Take Zinc Acetate by mouth on an empty stomach at least 1 hour before or 2 to 3 hours after eating.
- Swallow Zinc Acetate whole. Do not break, crush, or chew before swallowing.
- If you take eltrombopag, a quinolone antibiotic (eg, levofloxacin), or a tetracycline antibiotic (eg, doxycycline), ask your doctor or pharmacist how to take it with Zinc Acetate.
- If you miss a dose of Zinc Acetate, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.
Ask your health care provider any questions you may have about how to use Zinc Acetate.
Important safety information:
- Do NOT take more than the recommended dose or use for longer than prescribed without checking with your doctor.
- Lab tests, including copper levels and liver function tests, may be performed while you use Zinc Acetate. These tests may be used to monitor your condition or check for side effects. Be sure to keep all doctor and lab appointments.
- Zinc Acetate should be used with extreme caution in CHILDREN younger than 10 years old; safety and effectiveness in these children has not been confirmed.
- PREGNANCY and BREAST-FEEDING: If you become pregnant, contact your doctor. You will need to discuss the benefits and risks of using Zinc Acetate while you are pregnant. Zinc Acetate is found in breast milk. Do not breast-feed while taking Zinc Acetate.
Possible side effects of Zinc Acetate:
All medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome:
Nausea; vomiting.
Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); severe vomiting; unusual restlessness; very dry mouth, eyes, or skin.

If OVERDOSE is suspected:
Contact 1-800-222-1222 (the American Association of Poison Control Centers), your local poison control center, or emergency room immediately. Symptoms may include severe vomiting.
Proper storage of Zinc Acetate:
Store Zinc Acetate at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C). Brief storage at temperatures between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep Zinc Acetate out of the reach of children and away from pets.
